WH&Y Commissioner Anhaar Kareem has been named as one of the fifteen members of the Australian Government’s new Youth Steering Committee.
The members of the Committee were announced in November after a lengthy selection process that saw more than 1,200 applications from 12 to 25-year-olds around the country.
Minister for Youth, Dr Anne Aly, said the Committee will drive the development of a new Youth Engagement Model, creating meaningful opportunities for young Australians to have a say on government policies and programs. Dr Aly emphasised that the Youth Engagement Model will be developed for youth by youth, and that it will be supported by $10.5 million in funding.
“A government that not only works for young people but also with them, will be far more effective , delivering a better future for all of us,” she said.
At fifteen years of age, Anhaar will be one of the youngest members of the Committee which includes young people from every state and territory, and from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Anhaar has been a passionate contributor to the WH&Y Commission since joining, and was a powerful advocate for young people in Sydney’s west during the Covid-19 lockdowns, publishing an opinion piece in The Guardian and appearing on a special episode of the ABC’s Q+A.
