Joe Carrello graduated from Curtin University in Western Australia in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) and has worked in a range of clinical areas in the public system both locally at Royal Perth Hospital, and in the UK with the National Health Service (NHS). He also has extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector, being a volunteer mentor and committee member for Leading Youth Forward, a Perth-based charity providing one-on-one mentoring for disadvantaged young people between the ages of 12 and 15 years.

Joe was inspired to complete a Masters in Public Health at the University of Sydney after seeing the significant impact that socio-economic determinants were having on the health of his hospital patients, and on the teens involved with Leading Youth Forward. 

In 2019 he was awarded a scholarship through the Australian Prevention Partnership Centre to commence a PhD at the University of Sydney. His project will involve Health Economics and life-course modelling of obesity in adolescents and young adults, to support decision-makers in identifying when it is best to intervene, and what are the most cost-effective approaches.
