Esther Etkin

About

Esther Etkin is a first-year PhD student in the Faculty of Health at the University of Technology Sydney.

After completing her Masters in Gender at the London School of Economics (LSE) and serving as a Research Assistant in the LSE Department of Communications, she returned to her native South Africa to work at what was then the country’s largest youth HIV-prevention campaign, loveLife. During her time at loveLife, Esther worked as editor of the campaign’s monthly youth magazine before managing the campaign’s communications department, and spoke at various conferences on the role of short stories and narrative communication in HIV-prevention programming.

Later, while working as the national campaign manager for Nal’ibali, an early learning multilingual literacy campaign in South Africa, Esther was selected as one of The Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans for her work using mobile technology to promote behaviour change.

Her current research interests include social media as a social determinant of health among adolescents and young people, and the role of social media in shaping young people’s understandings of health.
